Electronics, Grrr!! and a Quilt Top

I have been anxious to sew the last few days, but found instead that I had to spend most of my free time transferring all of our data to a new laptop.  The old one was starting to randomly shutdown and then take forever to turn back on. Not a good sign.  So after a time of babying it along, we decided it was best to do a little out with the old and in with the new.  But . . . In with the new, always takes more time than you anticipate.  Electronics can be so frustrating to me.  I won't bore you with all of my struggles, but I am happy to say, that with a lot of help from my dear husband, I think I have all of the programs, files, and so forth loaded and hopefully am good to move forward.

So today . . . I got to sew!!!   And sew I did.  I spent the morning putting my  40" Starbust blocks together!!  I am so happy with how they came out.  I just love these colors together.  Julie did such a great job in creating this fun bundle!!

And I couldn't stop there.  I spent the afternoon adding the sashing so now the quilt top is complete!!  Yippee Skippee!!  Sadly, it is snowing right now so I can't take it outside and get a nice picture.  But I was to excited to share to wait.  What ya gonna do :)  At least I am all set for writing up Monday's tutorial for the Quilt-A-Long.  It's nice to feel like everything is not last minute :)  I'm linking this finish up with Amanda :)

Now, it's off to basting, quilting, and binding.  I have no idea how I want to quilt this yet.  I keep thinking of maybe trying some custom quilting but then the size intimidates me and I lean towards an all over design.  I am open to suggestions ;)  How do you think I should quilt this top??

  3. Yay for the quilt top! I feel your pain with the new laptop though, I got a new PC at Christmas time and it took ages to move stuff over and install it etc o.O

  4. How about pebbles in the white areas of the quilt block itself and wavy lines with some pebbles in between in the sashing area. I noticed some of the material has circles in it so I just thought pebbles would look nice. It's a great quilt, so I bet it will look great no matter what quilting you place on it. Blessings.

  5. 40" quilt blocks! Wow, I hadn't even noticed that was the biggest size. The finished top looks great:)

  7. I had to get a new computer recently too, it is Windows 8, and I hated it..okay I'm still not very fond of it. There are things that are SO touchy with the mouse movement. I put it on desktop. (I didn't get the touchscreen version).. and the sidebar things pop up ALL the time!! So many things to get used to. I wish they could just leave well enough alone.. I'm not a computer guru!

  8. My hubby is not only a chef, he's a computer geek (he's the web master for several sites), so if I have computer issues I just pass things off to him! Yes, I'm quite spoiled. :)

I've been thinking about the quilting myself. I'm making the 76 x 76 quilt size, but I've done queen size quilts before on my domestic machine, so the size doesn't scare me (besides, I'm the kind-of person who is so stubborn that I refuse to let anything intimidate me for too long.). It's what I'm going to do that is stumping me. I'm leaning towards a custom quilt job. I kind-a did one here ( http://www.dewings.us/blog/2013/01/11/because-i-love-you/ ) for my sister and I really enjoyed it. We'll see!

  9. I'm doing the paisley on mine but I know you did that already :)

For the white insides, an echo chevron would look good, be easy, and highlight the star shape.

Cross-hatch in the background? I've seen a few antique quilts that do that and then a fancy patter in the block. Lots of ways you can do this. Even maybe something like: http://www.ohfransson.com/oh_fransson/2012/02/sparkle-punch-quilt-along-finishing-the-quilt.html. I used that for a pattern once. Fun method and goes pretty quick!

  10. LOL I so agree with the electonics thingy. Your blocks are wonderful. I love the colors in the stars. Quilting? Hmmmm. Maybe some echoing? And in the sashings some straight lines? What ever you do it will be gorgeous.

  11. Wow your starburst is so pretty! Was this a custom bundle from The Intrepid Thread?

  12. The top looks great. If you want to stay on familiar ground, do something you feel comfortable doing. If you are in the mood for experimenting, look through designs you thought you'd like to try and pick one. Most anything is going to look good on that top, so agonizing is not allowed. =)

  13. I would definitely go custom on the quilting. To make it less intimidating look at the parts of the block, get out some paper and sketch out some ideas. Divide and conquer! The beauty of having such enormous blocks is tha the individual parts of each block aren't so tiny that they are difficult to quilt. It's wonderful, by the way!
