When I first heard that we would be using Riley Blake basics for the challenge I set out to design something that used only my favorite basic piecing blocks aka squares, HST's and Flying Geese. I just love the way this design came alive with the scrappy look. To what we were sent for the challenge, I added some Riley Blake basics in black. I had a wonderful little bundle I got at market last spring. It worked just perfect!
I ended up quilting it with the large spiraling circle. Ever since I saw this quilt from Kati, I have wanted to try this quilting design. That was 2 years ago and I was just waiting for the right quilt to come along and this was it. I just love how the curves softens all of those lovely points.
And while I love it, I don't need to do it again anytime soon. Oh man, that is a lot of spinning the quilt and my shoulder is feeling it this morning. 8 bobbins and several hours of quilting. Good times!! But oh, totally worth it!! Don't you just love that crinkly look a quilt gets coming out of the dryer for the first time. It just says cuddle with me :)
The quilt measures 48" x 48", just perfect to snuggle a wee one in. And oh the polka-dot biniding. I just can't get enough of polka-dots!!!
So that's it. Back to Basics, my first Modern Quilt Guild challenge quilt. I look forward to many more to come :)
Have a Happy Quilting Weekend!!!
Oh, and be sure to stop in next week, I have 3 new quilt shares that I can finally show, 2 blog hops, and 2 giveaways. Should be a fun filled week for sure :)
Linking up to Sarah's and Amanda's :)

ReplyDeleteLuv it....HAPPY to see you went with the circular QUILTING. :)
ReplyDeletewow this really turned out fabulous. I love the circles you did. really does soften it a lot. Job well done.
ReplyDeleteTurned out great Melissa. The spiral quilting looks fantastic. I'm part way through a small quilt that I am quilting in concentric circles but it got put away as others things took over. Need to get back to it and next time I'll do a spiral instead of concentric where each circle starts and stops. The spiral sounds much more efficient.
ReplyDeleteAnd this is why I didn't want to offer a quilting suggestion when you asked ... I wouldn't have gone for the circle design. And I absolutely love it on this quilt! I've tried the circle design and have made a mess of it. Obviously I need more practice.
ReplyDeleteThis quilt is just beautiful. I really want to try this pattern. Beautiful, beautiful job!
That's just wonderful how it turned out - there is so much to look at on it, I rarely want to go back for third helpings of looking at a quilt but this one made me!
ReplyDeleteLove it and so glad you did the spiral. I think it is amazing how much bobbin thread we go through but it just looks so great when done. :)

ReplyDeleteI really like this quilt! I love the random feel, but when I take a second glance it has a ton of continuity.
ReplyDeleteThis is beautiful and I'm glad for the close-up of the beginning of the spiral. I'm new to all this so I hope you don't mind my asking a couple questions. I see you didn't start smack dab in the center of your quilt; is there a reason for that? Also, is this done with a walking foot, or is it FMQing? Thank you!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely fabulous Melissa - the quilting really makes it!
ReplyDeletePS - I think a tutorial on machine quilting the spirals is in order :-)
